Migrating to Australia at an early age, John Ma is the son of a painter who dwelled inside his sketchbooks and movies. But it was when he stumbled onto a film-set while traveling through Asia, that his artistic direction took on a life of its own and storytelling became the driving force for his photography, writing, and filmmaking.
John’s first short film “Make Me” won awards and nominations around the world, and his recent photographic portrait series of the Siamese fighting fish won Silver Medal in the prestigious Prix de la Photographie Paris, and 2nd place at the inaugural Moscow International Foto Awards. And John’s photographic fine art prints have been selected for curation and exhibition at galleries including Black Box Gallery in Portland, Oregon and Camden Gallery in London, England.
Currently living in Sydney, Australia, John is photographing and assistant directing multiple theatre projects that will play at the New Theatre. And as part of an on-going project of amassing an unrestricted collection – “The Portrait of Flora - Australia” and “The Portrait of Fauna - Australia” – John applies fine art and abstract photographic techniques to capture and create intimate portraits of the unique Australian flora and fauna.
